"but a dream"

"if we shadows have offended,
think but this, and all is mended,
that you have but slumber'd here
while these visions did appear.
and this weak and idle theme,
no more yielding, but a dream"

-Shakespeare, Midsummer's Night Dream

new goldfraap!!

new goldfraap album Head First is out and i'm in love.

i think i played her new single rocket five times while at the gym.

the tracks are very 80s pop/dance meets electro.

fresh cuts for a fresh summer!

since youtube is being lame or her record company, whichever, i can't post the video but i'm giving you guys the link to watch the video on youtube.

its a MUST SEE/ MUST LISTEN !

ROCKET

after watching that tell me you didn't get some form of 'the neverending story' flashback because if you didn't then i might just be the only crazy one.

highly doubtful.

tasteful fashion.

so last night during dinner my uncle put on the show, "jamie oliver's food revolution". i think that show is so great and what jamie is doing is even greater, its such a wake up call to all of the ignorant people of America who thrive on processed foods.

anyway.

while watching this i thought of connections between food and fashion other than the fashion world getting slack for models being "too skinny" and what have you.

and i came across Fulvio Bonavia.

he's an award winning Italian photographer who started out as a graphic designer and illustrator for film posters before moving on to shoot campaigns for companies such as Yamaha, Jaguar, BMW, Adidas, Heineken, Audi, Saab.

in 2008 he published A Matter of Taste a conceptual work merging food with fashion, think Bayonna Ham as a ring, broccoli and raspberry handbags, sardine and spaghetti belts and a kiwi watch.

really cool stuff. i think his work is very creative merging fashion with food in a very modern, conceptual, eye appealing way.

in 2009 a french adaptation of the book was published and it was on exhibit as part of Le Gout Du Luxe in La Grande Epicerie in Paris.

here are some photos from A Matter of Taste as well as a few of my favorite photos from his other work Scent of Flower and some ad campaigns for Yamaha.

favorite painting 1

One of the most enchanting paintings ever. To capture a myth in such a soft illumination can warm any romantic's heart.

Midsummer's Eve was painted by Edward Robert Hughes (1851-1914). He often worked with watercolor/gouache.

After learning he used watercolor for that painting made me respect him even more.

the XX .

let's talk about it.

while reading new york magazine this morning over a cup of starbucks and a free pastry (score!) i came across an article about the XX.

their from wandsworth, southwest of london, and wear all black (shocking) and barely move while on stage, i guess to really emphasize their hipster swag (even more shocking).

the band members all met at the Elliot School which has impressive alumni such as Hot Chip.

the band was originally four members but keyboardist, Baria Qureshi left the band due to exhaustion. so now all we have left is Jamie Smith who produces the tracks while Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft lay down the vocals.

they released their debut album, xx, with Young Turks Records in August 2009. after their songs were used in many tv shows the band is finally getting the attention they deserve.

the soft instruments plus their sensual voices and sexual lyrics makes me ooze. i'm in love.

i included some videos for you guys to judge for yourselves.

enjoy.

fyi-their on tour as we speak so try to catch them in your town. below is the link to their website.

afyi- i think Oliver Sim is my new obsession.

the XX.

masstransiscope

So being that I commute from Brooklyn I take the express B train and I have to say it got WAY more enjoyable ever since Bill Brand restored his Masstransiscope which was originally installed in the abandoned Myrtle Ave. subway stop in 1980. His inspiration came from "Zeotrope" a method used in the early 20s to view film.

You can only see the installation when riding the B and Q trains into Manhattan.

I posted two videos, the first is an original broadcast of the installation and the second is a view from the subway currently with the installation in its restored state.

Super Cool. Super Trippy.

cheap thrill for $2.25 (and counting)

smoking + architecture

While browsing images of Amsterdam and reading about a third of the Red Light District being sold so luxury apartment rentals and shopping malls could be built (yeah I don't know about that) I stumbled upon a really cool building being built in the artistic district of Amsterdam North.

The creative, forward thinking architecture group, Allard Architecture, was inspired by matchboxes for this very modern, sleek building that will house spaces for creative and commercial purposes.

Executing the matchbox idea will be done using a facade of cantilevers that stick out up to 5 meters. Each cantilever will be angled different as to give each floor its own unique look. The building will be constructed of prefabricated concrete. The cantilevers are constructed of prefabricated concrete walls as well. Whats really cool is the interior has a galvanized steel finish so people can use magnets on the wall. A nice little detail considering the building itself has minimal steel.

Being a (now) occasional smoker I thought the stacking matchbox idea was really cool and I love how the building gives the illusion of floors protruding out towards you. Definitely a great building for an artistic district. If you want to check them out here's their website...
